The University of Iceland and the company Klappir Grænar Lausnir have decided to start collaborating in the field of teaching, research, and development of methodologies to assess the sustainable development of communities and organizations on the basis of the United Nations Global Goals for Sustainable Development. The collaboration is intended for the benefit of Icelandic society and its development towards sustainability.

The University of Iceland conducts research and teaching in the field of sustainability and focuses on strengthening the foundations of research and providing students with access to digital technology in the field of sustainability so that they are well prepared to tackle the tasks of the future. The University of Iceland's research includes the United Nations Global Goals for Sustainable Development, the Paris Agreement, and the success of companies in the field of sustainability.

Klappir is a public limited company that was listed on the First North market of Nasdaq in Iceland in 2017. There are about 350 legal entities that use Klappi's software, of which about 300 are domestic parties. Klappir digital solutions form a unique, collaborative overall solution in the field of environmental issues in Iceland. With Klappir software, ecological footprints can be minimized, compliance with environmental legislation can be ensured at any given time, and results can be demonstrated at the same time as operating costs are reduced.

The goals of the collaboration between the University of Iceland and Klappir are to work on strengthening methodologies and building knowledge in sustainability and related areas by using Klappa's software, for example in teaching. The second step is to apply jointly for grants aimed at developing methodologies for data collection, data analysis, and the dissemination of knowledge in sustainability and related fields, e.g. with an application for a Marketing Plan to Rannís.

On behalf of the University of Iceland, the project is led by Þröstur Olaf Sigurjónsson, professor at the Faculty of Business Administration, and Lára Jóhannsdóttir, professor at the interdisciplinary study program in environmental and resource sciences. On behalf of Klappair, dr. Jón Ágúst Þorsteinsson and Sigrún Jónsdóttir the lead the project. Scholars from Copenhagen Business School in Copenhagen and IE Business School in Madrid are partners.
