In a world where cities are responsible for over 70% of worldwide CO2 emissions, the way forward and the path towards change is not only technological, it is cultural. This is where Green Penguin, an innovative project by Iceland’s Klappir that has teamed up with Slovenia’s Iskraemeco, changes the game.
From children to the opportunity to reach the world. Green Penguin is an innovative blend of intelligent measuring, real-time data visualization and gamification to promote sustainable communities as well as enhance digital literacy. But its most radical feature is its point of integration: schools. “Data move science but stories and games move culture,” the project’s philosophy goes. With Green Penguin in place, schools finally have access to real-time data for resource consumption, teaching students how to influence both their energy-, water-, heating- and food waste use, while competing with each other about the least possible CO2 footprint.
Green Penguin continues to grow and develop through schools use and presentations at international venues. The innovation is representative of how tech, education and community engagement can come together to make a powerful environmental impact.
The story began in November 2020 at Climathon Ljubljana, a 72-hour hackathon with the mission of decarbonizing the city. A nine member team with no past experience working together between Iskraemeco and Klappir, have joined forces under the direction of Violeta Bulc, Former EU Commissioner for Transport. The team’s mandate was limited to one thing: to show citizens and businesses in Ljubljana how they could chip in, helping the city save electricity (and CO2) while simultaneously getting them interested about real energy efficiency through environmental consciousness. After much thinking, exploring and testing Green Penguin was the answer
Green Penguin continues to grow and develop through schools use and presentations at international venues. The innovation is representative of how tech, education and community engagement can come together to make a powerful environmental impact. When the children pop up in the project’s animation to say, “Awards are great, but it’s your turn now. We demonstrated to you how using data and digital tools to measure, analyze, and improve, rinse-and-repeat-based, can help communities shift culture. It's not hard to start. It's not costly at all." The call to action is clear: every community can make its own Green Penguin, constructing smart, sustainable, carbon neutral cities one school, one penguin and a saved piece of ice at a time.
Klappir is an Icelandic software solutions company that’s listed on Nasdaq First North and that enables companies, municipalities, investors and governments to take systematic steps towards better sustainability globally.
Iskraemeco is the global leader in smart metering and grid solutions, able to bring knowledge into energy: from interpretation of data, energetic consultancy, innovative products, and advanced technologies.
Together, they’re demonstrating that where technology meets nature’s needs, it transforms from possible to doable.
