Ölgerðin Egill Skallagrímsson is the largest beverage producer in Iceland. Ölgerðin produces, imports, distributes and sells beverages and food products throughout Iceland.

Why Klappir?

In 2008, Ölgerðin merged with Danól to form one of Iceland's largest businesses of its kind. Like many businesses in the manufacturing sector, the company's carbon footprint and CO2 emissions must be carefully managed. To address this, Ölgerðin has been a part of the Icelandic Climate Agreement since 2015 and has been implementing processes to support their goal of reducing their CO2 emissions by 40% before 2030.

Ölgerðin needed a solution that would allow accurate and transparent activity data tracking to meet their carbon management goal. This would allow them to improve their sustainability in a systematic and cost-efficient way. The requested requirements were to provide the company with a comprehensive overview of its energy intensity and carbon footprint as well as to facilitate ESG reporting by collecting environmental data in real-time throughout the year.

Results

In 2017, Ölgerðin teamed up with Klappir to collect activity data on their entire operation, including monitoring CO2 emissions. They have successfully produced ambitious goals and generated Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) reports that show their current position and progress as a result of implementing our ecosystem technology. The continuous data collection and data stream provided by Klappir's Sustainability Platform also helps the Ölgerðin staff make informed energy management decisions systematically and cost-efficiently.

The Results So Far

Several impressive results and milestones have been reached on their way to meeting their ambitious sustainability goals.

65% reduction in the combined Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions between 2016-2021.
89% reduction in the use of oil for steam boilers in production
30% reduction in the use of fossil fuels for the company's extensive distribution car fleet
