Hotel Arpoador: Sustainable hospitality, measured by the guest night

A family group on the edge of the ocean

Grupo Arpoador is a family-run hotel and restaurant group in Ipanema and Arpoador. Its properties sit a few steps from the sea, and the group has never treated sustainability as something separate from the business. The ocean, the city, and the community are why guests come, and protecting them is part of how the group operates. Its Sustainable City&Sea programme gives that commitment a structure across all four properties.

The challenge

The information was always there, just not in a usable form. Energy, water, gas, waste, employee travel and purchasing data sat in spreadsheets, invoices and manual controls, managed by different teams across four properties with very different operations. A restaurant does not run like a hotel, and a bar runs like neither. The group could produce an annual total, but by the time it arrived, the year was over, and the number could not show what to change.

How the programme works

HUBIS Consultoria designed the programme with the group. HUBIS built the data architecture, trained the teams, set up an internal committee and translated sustainability standards into daily hotel routines. Klappir became the data layer underneath, bringing energy, water, gas, waste, employee travel and purchasing into one standardised record across the group. Ctrl+Waste, from the team behind HUBIS, tracks how waste is generated, separated and where it ends up.

The step that changed how the numbers are used was dividing consumption by guest nights. A busy season uses more water, and that is not a decline. A per-guest-night figure separates performance from occupancy, so when it moves, it is worth looking at. Grupo Arpoador now follows emissions, water and energy per guest night throughout the year.

The results

With one verified data foundation, the group can report its progress with confidence. Grupo Arpoador is carbon neutral through ISS Neutro, Rio de Janeiro's municipal programme for the voluntary carbon market, which requires an audited emissions inventory. Its electricity is 100% certified renewable through I-RECs. Hotel Arpoador holds Green Key, and its Lixo Zero certification from Instituto Lixo Zero Brasil records 91.3% of waste diverted from landfill, incineration and co-processing. More than 100 employees have been trained through the programme, because data changes behaviour only when the people creating consumption can read the numbers.

The work has also been recognised. Hotel Arpoador won the Selo Verde de Hotelaria prize in 2024 and has been recognised in the category for four consecutive years. In September 2026, it took first place in the environmental category at the first Prêmio Hub ESG Hotel Business.

Looking ahead

The group's next steps are to extend Green Key across its remaining properties, further improve Zero Waste, and sharpen its focus on food waste. With a restaurant inside the reporting boundary and waste composition now visible, food waste is the natural next target, and the data foundation is already in place to measure it.
