Statement season kick off meeting

The event, hosted by Hulda Þórhallsdóttir, Klappir’s Head of Services, centered on the collaborative model that defines the Klappir Statement Support Program: the Sustainability Platform enhanced by an expert partner network.

The highlight of the event was a conversational session with current Klappir customers, Húsasmiðjan, Hagar and Íslandspóstur, which all have used the statement support in previous years. Turning to the experts: the statement support program participants offered first-hand insights into why sustainability reporting matters for their company and how the support they’ve had has helped them on the sustainability journey.

When asked for advice to newcomers, Anton Birkir Sigfússon, Head of Sustainability at Hagar, said: "Start now. The support is there to help you and the worth of it extends beyond only compliance. Do status checks regularly to see how everything is going and whether actions yield results. For us, it’s also a part of risk management for investors and fulfilling legal requirements.
Emilía Borgþórsdóttir, Sustainability manager at Húsasmiðjan added, “we’ve been with Klappir now for a long time, working with the data and analyzing it, and for example, from 2022 to 2024, we reduced our total hot water consumption by 26 percent, and that’s purely from monitoring and action plans.
Ásdís Káradóttir Head of Sustainability at Pósturinn: "For us, it’s about being able to measure our progress against our strategy and goals. It's a huge task, so it matters to get confirmation that we are on the right track. When you are working in sustainability, you are often working quite alone, so it's invaluable to have guidance and support from Klappir".

Insights from our partners: EFLA, ICR, and Altso

Another theme was the enhanced co-operation with key partners. Íris Rún Karlsdóttir, Head of Partnerships Klappir, moderated a partner panel, where EFLA, ICR and Altso discussed the new Statement Support Program.

"This is a new approach for the statement season," Íris explained, “Through our collaboration with EFLA, we’re redesigning our service pathway, with a clear vision to strengthen support for our existing customers and help them take the next steps toward greater transparency, accountability, and impact.

When asked about the most important aspect to a reliable statement, Eva Yngvadóttir, Environment, Society Division, at EFLA, highlighted planning and good data management. She emphasized the power of data, to be pro-active in data imports, viewing the data regularly and learning and acting on the outcome. She also raised concern for a common failure, commenting “It is important to act on the indicators, when they are happening, otherwise it is a lost opportunity. Proactive involvement and a clear plan from the outset are both crucial. The main thing for a quality report is that the foundation is good. It’s about having the right scope, the right assets, and keeping everything updated at all times."

Carbon Registry talked about how to create diversified, high-quality carbon offsetting portfolios, and Altso shared lessons learned from the effective communication of sustainability results to build credibility (to brand) and motivate stakeholders.
